Situation #3: Larry Adams has a PhD in history and is a university professor. He also has a master’s degree in counseling and is an LPC. He plans to open a part-time private practice and had business cards printed that read, “Dr. Larry Adams, Individual and Group Counseling.”

Larry’s counseling advertisement of being “Dr. Larry Adams” is unethical. The title “Dr.” is misleading in that he has not earned a doctorate in counseling or a related mental health field (Linde & Erford, 2018, p. 96). Counselors are not permitted to “imply doctoral-level competence when possessing a master’s degree in counseling or a related field by referring to themselves as “Dr.” in a counseling context when their doctorate is not in counseling or a related field” (2014 ACA Code of Ethics, C.4. Professional Qualifications).

Situation #2: A rehabilitation counselor is conducting a research study. Because raw data contains confidential information about individual participants, the counselor deletes all identifying data about the participants before giving the material to the secretary for computer entry.

I believe this was ethical because the counselor removed all person information from the material to keep the participants confidentiality before giving it to another party (American Counseling Association, 2015, P. 2).
