Hi,
here are three discussion, they all have different requirements.
1. Three Perspectives on the Role of Religion and God in Disasters and Catastrophes
The role of religion and God in natural disasters and catastrophes has been debated for a long time. Throughout time some have proclaimed that these devastating events are the “Hand of God” punishing people and nations for their “sins”. Others have often cited passages from different “Holy Writings” that God is “Protector and Savior” in times of trouble. Many organized religions have and continue to make very significant contributions after disasters strike with their relief efforts. Many of the World’s religions have also played a role as “guardians of culture and preservers of historical texts”.
Watch the three videos below and talk about them in the Discussion Forum.
What did you find interesting among what was shared? Do you agree with a particular perspective, if so why or why not? Do you have a different view to offer? Let us know.
watch these three videos.
Father Michael Catfish Mireau explains the church’s (Catholic – Christian) teaching on natural disasters.
Dr Philip Fountain and Dr Robin Bush from the Asia Research Institute, NUS, talk about how religious organizations play an important role in humanitarian assistance and disaster response, with a particular focus on the case of Muhammadiyah in Indonesia. Muhammadiyah is a Indonesian Muslim Organization founded in 1912.
This video is quite lengthy but very interesting. You are not required to watch the entire presentation. Watch the first 5 minutes then select 5 minutes somewhere in the middle and complete it by watching the last 5 minutes.
In this videoRabbi Abba Perelmuter world-renowned speaker, historian, comedian, and teacher begins to address the issue of God’s role in Natural Disasters.
2. Research on the Role of God in Disasters and Catastrophes
In this research and writing assignment we want you to explore the role of God in Disasters and Catastrophes. How have different people throughout the centuries viewed the involvement of God in these type of events? How has it influenced their individual responses? What about entire cities or nations? How have they responded to this idea of God’s involvement? We are looking forward to seeing what your research turns up on this fascinating topic.
There are two parts to this tasks:
First – choose a reading (from the “Reading Options” below) in which the author engages in a meaningful discussion surrounding the question “Where is God in all of this?â€. Then in a discussion thread write in 100 words or more a summary of the reading as well as your reaction to the author’s main points.
Second – read several of your fellow student’s responses and select one to comment on in 50 words or more. You can agree, disagree or further expand upon their observation but whichever you do you must share your reasons why in a polite manner.
This assignment is worth a total of 5 points: 3 points for your original post and 2 points for posting a reply to one of your fellow students post.
The two options to choose from are available from the library course guide. Librarian, Carin Graves, has prepared a brief tutorial on how to conduct a successful search of this database.
3. Can Animals Predict Disasters?
Animals are very much a part of the story of disasters and catastrophes. During the rescue effort after Hurricane Katrina, many people refused to be rescued if it meant leaving their pets behind. Animals are often a significant part of the rescue effort after earthquakes and other disasters that require finding people who have been buried. The videos below explain how some people believe animals are tuned into nature in such a way that they can sense (predict) a pending disaster.
Hear what they have to say and then in this discussion forum tells us what you think. Can animals predict disasters? If you had a pet in a time of a disaster, what would you do if the rescuers said “humans only”.
Thank you
