Pick one of the following prompts:

• Choose a particular theme/subject from the pieces we have looked at this semester and write an essay that explains the major concepts associated with that theme. Your essay should include how the theme/subject is similar or different among the various pieces, and how similarly or differently that theme/subject is practiced in the world today. You must use/analyze at least ONE piece from EACH unit. (NOTE: You cannot use the theme of ‘religion’ for this prompt).
• Pick ONE piece we have looked at this semester and do a detailed analysis of it in terms of the author’s background, life experiences, and culture. For example, how does the author’s culture/background influence his or her writing of the piece? What elements of the author’s culture does he or she want to integrate into the rest of the world?
• Based on the poetry OR story pieces we looked at this semester, write an essay comparing and contrasting the style, structure, and content of the genre you choose with material produced in that same genre today. For example, if you choose poetry, how does poetry from early world literature compare and contrast to forms of poetry we see today (e.g. songs)? How do the stories we read in the course compare and contrast to stories today? You must use/analyze at least TWO pieces (from any unit).
• One of the purposes of studying early world literature is to see/discover its relationship to our current world. Based on the pieces we have looked at this semester, write an essay explaining/analyzing how truths/principles from the various pieces could be implemented in American government and society today. Also include at least one example of a truth/principle you think would be detrimental to American Government/society. You must use/analyze at least ONE piece from EACH unit.

Minimum Required Sources:

• 3 Online – At least one from the DCCCD library database
• 3 Print – text counts as one (three volumes/parts counts as only ONE source)
• Must submit photocopy or picture of each print source used (other than text)

Outline:

• Intro (1 para, 10-12 lines): Introduction of topic and thesis statement.
• Body (multiple paras between 5 and 18 lines): Elaborate on thesis
• Conclusion (1 para, 10-12 lines): Summary
• Total length of essay: 6-8 pages (double spaced, not counting Works Cited; length starts with first word of introduction, not top of 1^st page)

• Times New Roman, 12 point font
• 1-inch margins all around
• Double-spaced
• Black ink, white paper
• Stapled (in order!)
• Works Cited page
• No separate cover page
• On only the first page, in the top left corner, one below the other, put your name, my name, ENGL 2332 and the date the paper is due
• On EVERY page (starting with the first page) in the top right corner put your last name and the page number
