In 2011, on the heels of the collapse of financial markets in 2009 and 2010, a series of protests, culminating in the movement referred to as “Occupy Wall Street”, took place around the world. From Wikipedia:

“The main issues raised by Occupy Wall Street were Social Inequality and Economic Inequality, greed, corruption and the perceived undue influence of corporations on government—particularly from the Financial Services sector. The OWS slogan, We are the 99%, refers to inequality and wealth distribution in the U.S. between the wealthiest 1% and the rest of the population. To achieve their goals, protesters acted on consensus-based decisions made in general assemblies which emphasized direct action over petitioning authorities for redress.

And this disparity is not just in the United States. Globally, the wealthiest one percent control almost 50% of the world’s wealth. One statistic recently cited by Forbes . is that the world’s wealthiest 85 individuals have more wealth that the poorest 3.5 billion people, combined. But as the tables cited in the Forbes article demonstrate, the disparity in income and wealth is most extreme in the United States.

Are you at all concerned over the current distribution of wealth in the United States? Do you think it desirable, or undesirable? What would you do, if anything, to change it? What are some of the implications of such a distribution? Do you think the concerns of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement – with economic and social (not to mention, political) inequality, and the increasing influence of corporations on government – are legitimate? Do you think it is the responsibility of the government – through its policies and programs – to address this disparity in wealth?

I’m sure not many of you have given a great deal of thought to this issue, but wealth has been trending upward for about 30 years now, with most wealth gains going to those at the very top. Consider the implications of this for the rest of us, the “99%”.
