Although my Mid-Week Musings will be minimalist this week, their purpose is not. It is designed to add to your understanding of the three theorists’ perspectives by providing a simple, two word framework that you can use to 1) re-visit their work and your initial/original posts earlier this week and then 2) share any new insights. The two words are “reflection” and “projection.”
Cooley and Mead believed that the self-concept was, in large part, the result of internalizing the reflections the person receives from others (especially during childhood), while Goffman argued that the self was the result of internalizing the contents of the projections a person exhibits in trying to manipulate the impressions that other people have of him/her (many of which begin as carefully constructed “performances” that become actual components of the individual’s self-concept.
