Authors describe their characters in various ways. There are two main forms of characterization:

Direct: the writer makes direct statements about a character’s personality and tells what the character is like.

Indirect: the writer reveals information about a character and his personality through that character’s thoughts, words, and actions, along with how other characters respond to that character, including what they think and say about him.

Write a journal entry (do not list!) answering the following questions about characterization in your book:

(Be sure to include at least two (2) quotations with page numbers from your reading.

Failure to include appropriate quotes will result in a half credit grade.)

• Does the author use more direct or indirect characterization? Explain.
• Give an example of each and tell why it is direct or indirect.

(Does it show physical appearance, actions, dialogue or thoughts?)

• Are there any characters that are more developed than others? Why do you think that is?

Tone is the attitude a writer has towards the subject he/she is writing about. Pick a passage that you think reveals a strong tone and write a complete journal entry (do not list!) answering the following questions:

• What is happening in the story during this passage?
• What is the tone in this passage?

Conflict is a big part of writing—it keeps people reading! Pick out examples of conflict in your novel and write a journal entry (do not list!) answering the following questions:

(Be sure to include at least two (2) quotations with page numbers from your reading.

Failure to include appropriate quotes will result in a half credit grade.)

Find two examples of conflict in your novel and tell me:

• What is the conflict?
• Is it man vs. man, man vs. nature, or man vs. himself?
• How was this conflict settled, or how do you think it will be settled?
• Why do you think the author included this conflict? What does it add to the story?

It is always important to keep in mind the perspective of a novel. We need to remember who is narrating the story and how the story might be different if told in a different voice. Write a journal entry (do not list!) answering the following questions about perspective in your book:

• Who is telling the story?
• What type of narration is it? (first person, third person, omniscient?)
• Whose character’s thoughts/actions do you know because of the narrator?
• Is there anything you do not know because of the narrator?
• How would the story be different if written from a different perspective?
