1302 Essay 2 Assignment
An analysis is the examination of smaller parts to gain a better understanding of the whole. In a literary analysis, the writer examines literary elements such as plot, conflict, language, characters, imagery, and symbolism in order to interpret and make a judgment about a literary work. Some writing about literature compares two or more texts, discussing ways in which the works resemble and differ from each other.
Assignment
For this essay you will choose two short stories from the following to analyze, compare, and contrast:
- “I Stand Here Ironing”

- “What We Talk about When We Talk about Love”
You may compare characters, themes, or other literary elements found in the two stories.

Unacceptable thesis: I am going to compare the similarities and differences between the character of Emily from “A Rose for Emily” and the character of Ed from “What We Talk about when We Talk about Love.”
Acceptable thesis: Both Jing-mei from “Two Kinds” and Dee from “Everyday Use” are disconnected from their mothers; however, Jing-mei seeks to distance herself from her Chinese heritage while Dee seeks to embrace her African heritage, actions that figure prominently in the theme of each story.
