A counselor working at an all-male federal prison distributed Styrofoam cups to each of member of a group of inmates. During the group session, she instructed them to write on the cups what it was that they felt “leaked” some of their self worth. For every leak, each man poked a hole in his cup. The counselor encouraged the men to talk about ways that their self worth could be mended, and she handed out tape for mending the holes. She did not collect any of the cups after the group session ended that day. When it was time for group the next week, the counselor was surprised to see the men holding their half-mended cups, waiting for group to begin so they could talk about the topic some more. This is an example of a very effective creative technique.
