Introduction

Recently, researchers have developed an interest to isolate new bioactive chemicals from marine resources due to their various beneficial health impacts. Among these marine resources, the marine algae are some of the most valued source of structurally bioactive compound. According to scientific studies, the cell walls of marine algae have substantial amounts of sulphated polysaccharides (SPs) like fucoidans that are present in brown algae, ulvans that are present in green algae and, most importantly, carrageenans that are present in red algae (Zhu et al. 2009). According to Arico & Salpin (2005), the sulphated polysaccharides show various important biological activities like antiviral, anticoagulation, anticancer, antioxidative and immunomodulating activities. Consequently, marine derived sulphated polysaccharides can be used to develop various products including pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals and, more importantly, cosmetics. These benefits present a general idea of biological activities and possible health benefits of sulphated polysaccharides from marine algae. As technology continues to become more available, scientific research in extreme environments such as polar ecosystems and deep sea is likely to increase. According to Bowker (2000), scientific research in this environment will not only expand human knowledge about extreme oceanic environment but, also, will provide with new opportunities for discovering valuable compounds and resources for the possible benefit to the food, pharmaceutical and cosmeticeutical sectors. In this regard, this research discusses bio-prospecting for important services or products. The study will consider the following in discussing bioprospecting in these regions: features of the oceanic environment that promote bio-prospecting; possible difficulties of bio-prospecting; discovered examples of bio-prospecting; and possible future discoveries.
