American History since 1877 Forum

Dear Tutors,

please help with History forum.

1) What were some of the key features or components of the Cold War and what impact did they have on the competing powers? Do you think that there are any pieces of the Cold War that still persist today?

WEEKLY FORUM REQUIREMENTS

The weekly discussion forums ask you to respond to one of the questions listed by the instructor. Your response should be at least 300-350 words in order to receive credit. The instructor asks your response to follow the FACT/EVIDENCE, ANALYSIS/OPINION, QUESTION model (see below) that includes 1) a factual response to the question with a direct quote and proper citation, 2) analysis of the factual information with citations if needed and opinions reflecting on the topic, and 3) one question that you have about the topic or one question you would like to ask the class that is connected to the topic AND one question that is for your professor.

Suggestion: rather than re-stating what others have said, post fresh ideas that look at the topics from a unique perspective. Do not hesitate to ask questions that might spark further discussion by others. Feel free to include your own personal analysis or understanding of the readings. Remember, you will be responding to three other students and to your instructor’s follow-up question. All direct quotations from the textbook and/or other source must be cited properly. Paraphrased information must be cited as well. You MUST draw from the textbook in supporting your answer, but you MAY also quote from another credible, academic source. Contact your instructor if you are not sure whether one of your sources meets this standard. Avoid Wikipedia or Ask.com or similar sites.

Your main response to this week’s question is due by Friday of this week. You have until Sunday night to respond to other students, and you have until the following Friday to respond to the instructor’s follow-up question. Your response to students should be thoughtful. Do not merely write, “great post.” Tell the student why you think the post is effective, mention new ideas, or ask questions that will keep the conversation interesting and educational.

All sources must be cited in the forum post. Since we cannot insert footnotes on the forums, simply include a number in parenthesis and then list the bibliographic information at the bottom of your post (see example below.) You can also choose to include an MLA parenthetical citation with the author’s last name and page number at the end of a sentence in which source information appears. Do not utilize MLA and footnotes; please choose one citation method or the other. You still have to include the bibliography listing at the bottom of the post. Here is an example:

MODEL RESPONSE

Question: Why was President Andrew Johnson impeached and what impact did it have?

FACT/ANALYSIS: The textbook reveals that Johnson was charged with “high crimes and misdemeanors” on “eleven counts of misconduct.” We learn this week that Johnson opposed black suffrage and vetoed the Reconstruction Act of 1867, but that Congress overrode his veto. The Reconstruction Act of 1867 divided the country into military districts and provided specific instructions on how freed blacks would be allowed to vote in elections, but prevented ex-confederate leaders from voting. Johnson also suspended Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. The impeachment did not bring down the president because Congress fell short of convicting him. The book states that the “dissenting Republicans felt that removing a president for defying Congress was too damaging to the constitutional system of checks and balances.” The impeachment did open the door for Ulysses S. Grant to become the next president (1). OPINION/REFLECTION: Although the book does not specifically state what charges were brought against Johnson, it seems as though Congress wanted to punish him for his anti-suffrage views. It is clear that tensions were high during this period, and that the country was still trying to grapple with all the difficulties of the post-Civil War period. I am wondering if Congress was trying to get revenge on Johnson or whether there were actually any real crimes or misdemeanors. It’s interesting how the ex-confederates were prevented from voting, but I guess this was necessary to keep them from coming back into power. I learned from the reading that during an impeachment, the House of Representatives serves as the prosecutor and the Senate is the court. I also find it interesting that the southern states were divided into military districts, but I guess this is what they needed to do to ensure that freed blacks could vote. It is amazing how many changes took place during the country at this time. To think that people who were slaves right before the war would be voting in just a few short years is amazing. QUESTION FOR THE CLASS: My question for the class this week is: Do you think there is any connection between the black suffrage movement and the women’s suffrage movement that came later?
