Question 17: How are the behavior and style of charismatic and transformational leaders similar?
ANSWER
Charismatic leaders are thought to possess superhuman qualities or powers of divine origin that set them apart from ordinary mortals. They put society’s focus on both the problems being faced and the leader’s revolutionary proposed solutions. These leaders must project an image of success for their followers to believe they possess superhuman qualities. There were many debates and controversy over charismatic leadership until the publication of James MacGregor Burn’s Leadership. This book identified only two forms of leadership, which were transactional leadership and transformational leadership.
Transformational leadership is defined by a leader changing the status quo by appealing to followers’ values and their sense of higher purpose. These leaders emphasize the problems in the current system and have a compelling vision of what a new society or organization could be. This new vision is an ideal that fits both the views of the leader and the followers. Transformation leaders often raise the standard of human conduct and morals. A common practice of these leaders is to refrain by addressing how problems and issues being faced by the followers can be resolved by the leader’s vision of the future.
All transformational leaders are charismatic, but not all charismatic leaders are transformational. Transformational leaders are charismatic because they can communicate a compelling vision of the future and form strong emotional attachments with followers, who support the leader because the visions align with both the leader and the followers. Both transformational and charismatic leaders are inherently future-oriented. They also have the same values and rhetorical skills, which heighten the followers’ emotional levels. Similar characteristics also include their ability to build a particular kind of image in the hearts and minds of their followers and their personalized style of leadership.
