Answer these questions as a response and then response to two students.

This week we have spent some time with one of America’s preeminent female black playwrights and her play Pulitzer Prize winning play Topdog Underdog. From last week’s lesson you have also been researching and discussing other playwrights and their productions. All of the playwrights that you researched would be contemporaries of Susan Lori Parks. Your work has been really strong and the plays and playwrights you are writing about are terrific.

So I thought that as we wrapped up our section on African American Theatre I would ask a slightly more personal question:

Reflecting on all of our work so far with rise and history of African American Theatre, its social, cultural and political issues that the genre wrestles with then and today, and the discoveries you have made over the last three weeks, how has your historical understanding, attitude, view, or feeling toward this kind of Theatre, T.V. and film changed or altered? Has it changed or altered? Why or why not?

And second, who would you take with you to watch a play like Topdog Underdog? Would you feel comfortable taking your parents, close friends or relatives? Why or why not? What about the play would be uncomfortable or thrilling? Do you think it would be a positive experience for you or them? Why or why not?

Start a thread and in subject put “(your full name) – Be sure to copy the questions above and post them with your answers!!! – Minimum 150 words – Use complete sentences and correct grammar.

Part 2: Your Comments: Read and respond to two other students’ answers. Make sure you are specific and identify who and what you are responding to.

When considering African American Theatre and film production, I do think I have an altered outlook and view/feelings towards it. I have become more inspired by the way these African American playwrights have incorporated past historical events into their modern-day theatre and film productions. For example, we began with August Wilson’s play of “Fences” and saw it transform into a new release film, with the help of Denzel Washington. It shows the honest reality of how life was in the U.S. at the time of the 1950’s. As well as, Suzan-Lori Parks’ influence, as being the first African American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for her drama play, “Topdog Underdog.” Overall, I think its great that African American theatre is being much more appreciated and analyzed. Its great to see how these theatre productions and movies still come out with storylines that relate to the reality of past historical events that African American individuals went through.

I would probably take my boyfriend to see this play, it’s not something we would go and see, but I think it would be interesting to see, now that we have studied this play more in-depth. I would and wouldn’t feel comfortable taking my parents to see this play. I would take them if it was something that perhaps interested them, but on the other hand, I am not sure how they would feel about it. I suppose this play would be an experience you have to see for yourself if you like it or not to recommend it to others. I think its much more different watching a play in person then reading it on paper. However, I would not mind seeing it especially with all the recognition Parks has gotten for her playwrights.

After reviewing and conducting exercises on the African American films over the past three weeks, my view and attitude is unchanged. I believe my standing was unchanged due to my educational background and willingness to see all different types of views from people. I still believe it is very important for everyone to be well informed of our pasts so we will not repeat such hurtful ways on any race.

And second, who would you take with you to watch a play like Topdog Underdog? Would you feel comfortable taking your parents, close friends or relatives? Why or why not? I would take my wife to watch the play Topdog Underdog, as we share similar views when it comes to understanding that below the surface of an uncomfortable topic may lay a deep meaning or learning experience. Additionally, such views run throughout my ‘inner circle’ and family, so I would have no issue taking anyone I knew to such a play. The most shocking or thrilling part of the play that I think would start a lot of discussion would be the ending of the play. For Booth to shoot Lincoln is a shocking way to end the play and would spark debate between myself and family making going to the play a positive experience.
