You have conducted field research on practice related to the disorder, an interview with a mental health professional. Based on all of the information you have gathered, develop a paper that includes the following:

• Describe the cause, extent, and nature of the disorder, such as number of people diagnosed and under treatment, demographics, and other factors of interest.
• Explain how the selected disorder is diagnosed.
• Explain how the selected disorder is treated. Be sure to include all the views on appropriate treatment and comment on diversity of views or dissent.
• Differentiate the diagnosis of this disorder from those of the other disorders within the same diagnostic category.
• Comment on culturally bound syndromes, cultural biases, or the interplay between assessment and diagnosis and culture.
• Provide data from the professional interview completed relevantly and substantively integrating this information into the body of the paper. Provide the name of the interviewed professional with his/her credentials. Written transcripts of the interview should be recorded and submitted with the assignment (e.g. in paper as an appendices).

Interview Questions of Autistic Parent:

1. What made you have your child evaluated for autism?
At 18moms we went to his pediatrician for his wellness check up and they were evaluating his milestones. At the time he wasn’t babbling and made poor eye contact. His pediatrician then referred us to get evaluated by Easter Seals early intervention.
2. What she was your child diagnosed?
He was Dx Woth Autism and speech delay
3. What was involved in the evaluation?
They did Cognitive, gross/fine motor and speech testing. They also had us as the parents answer questions on pregnancy/labor history, child developement/skills at home and parent medical history background.
4. What program/services are available and provided to your child?
In 2016 Luke’s law was passed and he was able to get ABA services. At the time there was a $25000 cap on services he could get that insurance would pay for. In 2017 the cap was taken off and now he can receive service more services. He’s currently enrolled at Behavioral Analysis No ka Oi (BANKO) in Honolulu and gets about 10hrs/week of ABA services there after his regular school.

So far he has received services from Easter Seals which included speech, OT & PT. Services ended at 3years old

After services were cut we did speech therapy, OT & PT at sprouts therapy in Kahala. We had to stop services because insurance would not reimburse us and it was very costly. We had to pay about 1k per month for 2-1 hr sessions on the weekend every month.

He current is enrolled in the SPED program from the DOE system. He gets speech therapy from them but it’s very little. The state likes to give you at least as possible due to funding.

5. How did you feel after dx?
I had a hard time accepting that my child was diagnosed with Autism. I felt that because of this label he wouldn’t thrive…after about a year and all the time, money, tears, hopes, help, encouragement from other families and the TACA (talk about curing autism) I finally started to stop putting expectations on our situation and just starting to see all the positives it brought to my life. It helped me to look at what was the main things in life like for example…what made my son happy, what worked for us to thrive better as a family, what made us laugh. As hard as everything was mentally, physically and financially the root of it all was we had a little boy who needed us to help him thrive in anyway possible. From there we just started to go with the flow…what helped is that more people are becoming aware of children with special needs . People would look and stare at us we he had a melt down in the restaurant. We’ve gotten so numb to what other people think we just go with the flow. We have good days and we have bad days.
6. What recommendation can you offer a new Autism parent?

Seek help from your pediatrician and get a referral to get evaluated by Easter Seals. We worked with TACA to get info and to have group events so that we could meet with other families going to similar situations. Look into ABA services ASAP. There is a wait list to get services ever since the took off the cap and there is very few providers for these services. Also Shriners has a program that provides help.
