1. This should be addressed to Timothy Mullen

Richard Nixon’s presidency is often viewed as a turning point in the American Political system. Nixon’s legacy of revolutionizing foreign relations and trade, environmental policies, and nuclear arms control is often overshadowed by his involvement in the Watergate scandal. Determining whether the scandal Nixon was involved in outweighs the positive impact of his legacy is a subject historians continue to disagree over.

Nixon’s achievements while in office included nuclear arms control. Nixon and Brezhnev, the leader of the Soviet Union in 1969, engaged in Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) and reached an agreement which limited nuclear arms capabilities for both nations (Hallock, 2013). This not only bolstered Nixon’s credibility, but also provided some comfort to the American people who were concerned about a nuclear war. Another of Nixon’s achievements while in office was his creation of the Environmental Protection Agency in hopes of curbing rampant pollution (Parnass, 2013). This agency still exists today and has continued to work toward the reduction of pollution as well as other human practices that harm our environment. Furthermore, in an attempt to revive the American Economy, Nixon began to take steps to allow for trade with China by relaxing trade agreements in 1969 and initiating informal negotiations with Mao, the Chairman of the People’s Republic of China (Hallock, 2013). Today, because Nixon initiated trade with China, our foreign relations and trade with them are flourishing.

Nixon’s presidency was also marred with scandal and bad politics. His infamous “Southern Strategy” was a racist effort by Republicans in the South to gain the support of white voters by appealing to their hatred of African Americans. Today, manifestations of this strategy still president in politics, and was evident in Donald Trump’s campaign as he “relied on coded appeals to racism” to earn to support of voters (Heer, 2016). Richard Nixon was also involved in Watergate, a political scandal and after it was discovered that he attempted to cover up his involvement, he resigned from the office of the US Presidency. Today, this scandal still has lasting effects on the US legal system, political system, and how citizens view these entities.

The way Richard Nixon’s presidency began with the “Southern Strategy” and ended with his resignation due to his involvement in the Watergate coverup will always overshadow any of the positive policies and changes he implemented while in office. Although he may have a positive and lasting impact in current policy, politics, trade and economy, the American people will never be able to shirk the global embarrassment brought on by Richard Nixon’s racist campaigns and the Watergate Scandal.

2. This should be addressed to LaShundre Foxx

President Nixon was the 37th U.S president and they say it was the best to remembered as the only president to resign from office. He stepped down in 1974 just halfway through his second term, rather he faces his impeachment over his efforts to cover up a lot of illegal activities. It was by the members of his administration in the Watergate scandal. They ended his presidency by furnishing proof of his involvement in the Watergate cover-up, fueled a generation skepticism about political leaders and today provide calculation behind the most important decisions of his presidency. Nixon was only traditional as he could be just the only as liberal as he had to be. Nixon took a lot of credit for the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency while privately noting that if he had not taken this liberal step; so the Democratic Congress would have forced more liberal environmental legislation on him. President Nixon most celebrated achievements when he had the nuclear arms control agreements with the Soviet Union and the diplomatic opening to China that set the stage for the arms reduction parts and careful diplomacy that brought about the end of the Cold War. The Strategic Arms Limitation Talks and the China initiative as ways to blunt criticism from political left.
