Pervious Assignment feedback from Professor Justification for grading decision. Re EOMP: Your report was quite well presented although there were minor errors sufficient to prevent you being awarded a grade of distinguishable quality. You also exceeded the word-count and this is the second occasion that I am aware of. There is a strict policy at Essex University online that if the word-count is exceeded then it will result in a 10% deduction of marks – I have no discretion on this. I suggested you use more appropriate sub-headings based on the assignment questions and relevant learning outcomes. My aim in pointing this out to you was to help ensure that in future you would concentrate on answering all parts of the question and staying focused on the requirements – this would avoid you failing to answer significant parts of the question as you did for this assignment. I explained that you had completed some good work but there was limited evidence of the links to making the economic case as required by the question – I did acknowledge that you had completed one paragraph relating to the cost of drugs but there was no relationship made to any economic argument and, for example, where you did say “why not put an end to such economic cost to society…”, you could have made links to the economic theories or models such as Becker or Ormerod et al. This questions your understanding of the learning you should have developed over the nine week period. You cannot achieve a high grade if you do not answer significant parts of the question as this has a knock on effect that you do not demonstrate any understanding of the module learning. One of the learning outcomes indicated that you should demonstrate your understanding of criminological and economic theory but I could not see any evidence of your understanding and therefore the grade I awarded for the element ‘understanding’ was, in hindsight, too high. I explained in my feedback various theories that you could have referred to that would show what was expected. I also believe that the standard of literature you referred to was well below the level expected for a stage 6 module. I have discussed this with you on many previous occasions and your need to access the university libraries. I have always offered support and suggested you contact your student advisor for help but this is something that you have only just taken on-board although it has been a constant issue since you started your studies with Essex. You only referenced seven documents and three of these were news reports; there was no academic literature and you did not use your module text book which had valuable information for you to create argument. I am unsure if you have ever accessed your module text book as you have not made any indication that you have gained knowledge from its contents – especially as Chapter 11 was dedicated to the issue of economics and drugs. I have tried to explain throughout all of our modules together that the quality of literature and wider reading that you conduct will have an impact on the quality of your argument and, subsequently, the quality of your assignment.
