PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Project Introduction:
This project is designed to be a comprehensive assessment of what you have learned in this program. The scenario is a serious criminal investigation involving many different facets of the criminal justice system. You will document the investigation from taking the initial crime report through preparation for review by your supervisor and the prosecuting attorney. You will be required to use several of the tools that you have been given such as SmartDraw, Identi-Kit, and the online student kit.
The scenario will give you the factual basis for the investigation while still allowing individual creativity. This is a real-world simulation that gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your grasp of the concepts and theories that have been presented with during the course of the Criminology and Forensic Technology program. You will submit a weekly progress report on your project in the weeks that a project part submission is not due. There are eight progress reports (Weeks 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, and 10).

Project Part 1
Assessment Preparation Checklist: Lessons for Weeks 1–6 pertain to Project Part 1. Complete your project progress reports for Weeks 2, 3, 4, and 5.
Detailed preparation checklists are below for each of the four tasks for Part 1 of the project.
TASK 1: OFFENSE REPORT Refer to Chapters 21, 25, 27, and 28 to research report writing and interacting with the victim. Review how to write an offense report in the Week 4 lesson topics: Criminal Justice Report Writing and Basic and Advanced Reports.
TASK 2: DETECTIVE INTERVIEW (AND WANTED POSTER) Refer to Chapter 30 to research wanted notices (also called “wanted posters”). Refer to Chapter 33 for advanced victim interviews; your Identi-Kit wanted poster will be developed from the detective interview with the victim. TASK 4: INVESTIGATIVE REPORT Refer to Chapters 21–25 and 33 to research report writing techniques. Review how to write an investigative report in the Week 5 lesson topic: Criminal Investigation: Investigative Stages.
Title: Investigation Case File, Part 1
Click here to read the given scenario. The crime you are to investigate involves a child enticement via computer and possible sexual assault of a minor. An undercover operation will be conducted to arrest the offender. Investigate the case from complaint to initial arrest. Complete and submit the following project tasks for the final case file.
TASK 1: OFFENSE REPORT
An offense report details what is alleged to have occurred during a crime. To get this information, you must interview the victim, and interacting well with the victim will result in obtaining the best information for the report.
Requirements: Complete the provided IBR (Incident Based Report) form. Include a report on the initial interview with the victim in the Narrative section.

investigating detective. From this interview, you will create a wanted poster.
Requirements for the Wanted Poster: Create in Identi-Kit. Include an image of the suspect. Include the suspect’s identifying information. List law enforcement contact information. Use at least one page.
Also, you will include a summary of the interviews with the victim and reporting person in the Investigative Report.
TASK 3: OPERATIONAL PLAN
Develop an operational plan in regard to the arrest of the suspect in this case. This plan details all of the operational considerations for a particular action. It includes objectives, orders, and communication concerning information about the investigation.
Requirements: Use the provided Operational Plan template. Include:
o Situation
o Mission
o Execution
o Support
o Communication The suspect’s identifying information. List law enforcement resources used.
Length will vary depending on complexity of the operation.

TASK 4: INVESTIGATIVE REPORT
The investigative report is the detectives’ map for the investigation. In this report, you, in the role of the detective, will document all steps in the investigation. All evidence, documents, and reports will be cataloged in this report.
Requirements: Use the Investigative Report template; fill in information as indicated in blue text. Include all pertinent details of the investigation. Include the victim, suspect, and witness’ identifying information. Include the summary of the detective interviews with the victim and reporting person. Provide a road map of the investigation up to a given point in time; an investigative report may be reviewed periodically by the supervisor to track progress.
This report will vary depending on the details of your investigation. It should be several pages by the conclusion of the investigation.
For Part 1 of the project, you should have a good start on the report with one to two pages of information.

TASK 7: CRIME SCENE SKETCHES Make sure you have the SmartDraw software and you are familiar with its use. Refer to Chapter 42, pp. 1132–1133, and Chapter 49 to research crime scene sketching. Review how to use SmartDraw in the Week 9 lesson topic: Crime Scene Sketching.
TASK 8: DATA COLLECTION REPORT Refer to Chapter 53 to research documentation and collection of data. Review how to document and collect data in the Week 11 lesson topic: Computer Forensics.
TASK 9: ARREST WARRANT Refer to Chapters 1 and 30 to research arrest warrants, and Chapter 58 for requirements of the criminal act. Review how to obtain an arrest warrant in the Week 3 lesson topic: Requirements of a Criminal Act.
Title: Investigation Case File, Part 2
Complete the investigation which involves interrogating the suspect, obtaining a search warrant, processing the scene, and completing the follow up investigation. This will involve the forensic examination of one or more computers and processing the scene of an alleged sexual assault. You will prepare the case file for review by your Sergeant.

Complete and submit the following eight project tasks for the final case file:
TASK 1: COMPLETED INVESTIGATIVE REPORT—INCLUDING CASE FILE CHECK SHEET
The investigative report is the detectives’ road map for the investigation. In this report, you, in the role of the detective, will document all steps in the investigation. All evidence, documents, and reports will the cataloged in the investigative report.
Requirements: Use the Investigative Report you turned in for Part 1 of the project and add to it as you progress through the rest of the project. Include all pertinent details of the investigation. Include the victim, suspect, and witness’ identifying information. Provide a road map of the investigation up to a given point in time. An investigative report may be reviewed periodically by the supervisor to track progress.
This report will vary depending on the details of your investigation. It should be several pages by the conclusion of the investigation.
For Part 2 of the project, you should have two to three pages of information total.
TASK 2: SUSPECT INTERROGATION
The suspect interrogation must be documented. Once you have completed this documentation, copy it to the Investigative Report as a separate entry.

TASK 3: SEARCH WARRANT AFFIDAVIT, SEARCH WARRANT, AND SEARCH WARRANT RETURN
You will need to secure a search warrant. You will also need to fill out a search warrant return to document what was found in the search.
Requirements: Create in the provided Word template. Include a search warrant affidavit, search warrant, and search warrant return. Include all required sections including property seized.

TASK 5: CRIME SCENE LOG
A crime scene log is a record of every person who accesses the boundaries of the crime scene, including officers, supervisors, and civilians. The officer in charge must authorize each entry, while the officer in charge of security records the entries.
Requirements: Use the provided template. Include an accurate listing of how the crime scene was secured and who has entered and exited the scene and when. Length will be dependent on size and duration of the crime scene. Record all the activity you expect there to be at your crime scene where the computer is found.

Remember to include an evidence report for the lifted latent fingerprint you are to collect for the fingerprinting deliverable. The length of your report will be determined by the level of detail in the crime scene. If you are unable to provide photos or scan sketches, provide narrative descriptions for those sections.

TASK 7: CRIME SCENE SKETCHES
You will use SmartDraw to create a sketch of the crime scene.
Requirements: Create in SmartDraw and export to Word. Include a legend for each sketch. Include all appropriate measurements. Match the details of the crime scene documented in the Crime Scene Report.
TASK 8: DATA COLLECTION REPORT
When a computer is involved in a crime, it must be properly transported and the data collected following certain procedures. In this report, you will document how the computer is transported and the data is collected. This information should be copied over to the final investigative report as a separate entry.
