Cultural Psychology Step Out of Cultural Comfort Zone
compare how different cultures approach mental illness.
thinking how different it is in the hospital vs. everyday life. The culture is the hospital
is so different because what is normally considered taboo in everyday life outside the
hospital is the social/cultural norm in the hospital. How a person reacts to your
negative emotions and behaviors in the hospital is very different than if you were in a
public place displaying those emotions. found that many of my peers who’s
background was middle eastern or Latino did not have the support of their families to
be in the hospital where as people who have more of a western medication mindset
encouraged their love ones to be there and valued the therapists opinions and so on.
The behavioral hospital I was in was for emergencies and people typically were not in
longer than two weeks and that would have been I really long stay, it was a revolving
door, but I was waiting to have a space open up in a long term facility so I was there
much much longer than other patients. I think this related more closely with chapters
4, 5 and 6. I also think it relates the chapter 7 and culture of honor. I would have to
look up some studies on how researchers are now interested in biological differences
in people that suffer from mental illnesses and not just social and cultural differences.
