Evaluate these observed sessions paying particular attention to what went well and what could be improved upon (1.1). This needs to include the effects of good communication skills and the effects of poor communication skills.
• There should also be links to theories covered in induction e.g. how your own perception and background may affect the situation; how your verbal and non-verbal communication affected your communication; theories covered might include SOLER/SURETY, Argyle, Cooley; stereotyping e.g. Elliott.

2. Identifies and evaluates at least three barriers to effective communication and interpersonal interaction.

• You need to write about cultural, ethnic and environmental barriers.
• Reflect on a situation when you found it hard to ‘get your message across’. Briefly describe and evaluate what went well (if anything), what the difficulties were and why and then go on to suggest ways in which you could have communicated differently to overcome these barriers (2.1). Link to theory e.g. SOLER, Argyle, the 6 C’s of nursing.

3. Identifies 3 support services for effective communication.

• Evaluate the role of these support services and how they can aid effective communication and interpersonal interaction (3.1).
• You need to write about the positives, negatives, limitations, advantages and disadvantages of support services. For example, a simple search online about the criticisms of Language Line will give you evidence to include here. Remember, not all Chinese people speak the same language.
