Writing an Introduction

This week, you will write an introduction to your topic that coherently presents your chosen topic by explaining why it is important enough to investigate. You may have a strong idea at this point about a topic of interest for your upcoming dissertation. In this course, you are strongly encouraged to continue thinking about a topic that you will develop throughout your PhD program, one which will become the focus of your dissertation.

Remember, the dissertation is not a separate piece of work, something to be tacked onto your education. The dissertation is the culmination of your studies, and you should be gathering pertinent skills, information, and resources throughout your program that will prepare you for the end goal of your program. You will become a highly skilled and informed writer by choosing a topic early and pursuing that topic throughout the courses you take. So, when you think about a topic for the Signature Assignment in this course, and in the courses to follow, think about the ultimate goal of your program!

Introducing the topic: When writing an introduction to your topic, consider the following points:

  1. Choose a topic that is on the cutting edge of research. The topic should strike a balance between having enough research done on it thus far to make it a worthy topic of discussion among academics, and being a topic that has been chewed over so much that it’s old news. To put it another way, there has to be research available on your topic, as well as a gap in the research, that you hope to fill.
  2. Be sure that the topic you select is one that has an impact on the field of education and on the condition of the human being. How will we all be better off as a result of your research?
  3. Find an important unsolved issue in educational research as one way to approach the introduction of your topic. When preparing your introduction, you will essentially present the reader with an argument; you will argue that you have located a significant problem that has been insufficiently researched. In fact, making a coherent, logical argument is a writing tool that you will use throughout your PhD course of studies, where you will be asked to take a critical look at issues, review the literature, and then explain and support your own stance.
  4. Remember, your Signature Assignment for this course is a literature review of a topic that you are refining for eventual use in your dissertation, or of a topic that you may have previously selected. Your literature review will also include a well-organized argument that introduces this topic and explains its importance.
  5. View the Search Like an Expert tutorial in the Books and Resources for this Week and learn to use a thesaurus to make searches. Throughout your course of studies and in your dissertation, you will be required to use recent research and peer-reviewed articles published within the past 5 years; so be sure to learn how to limit your search by year. The Northcentral Library, with its informative tutorials, responsive search engines, and excellent library source, will be your best support in performing library searches. Consider subscribing to newsletters and RSS feeds to stay current on your topic. (Check the Northcentral Library resources to learn how to create an RSS feed).
  6. Continue this week to further explore skills such as paraphrasing giving credit to the work of others, using quotation marks, and citing the work of others in the proper format.

Topic: “Technology, Its Effect on Teaching in Higher Education”

For this assignment, develop an introduction of a minimum of three or more paragraphs that uses supporting research with appropriate citations.

The first paragraph will introduce the main topic (issue) of the proposed paper by situating the topic in the field of education and will explain why it is important and warrants further study.
(Note: The main topic becomes the level 1 main heading of the paper following the introduction.)

The second paragraph (or more) should introduce the two to four subtopics that are related to the main topic and provide context for them using supporting research as needed.
(Note: These subtopics become the level 2 subheadings following the main heading; do not use article titles as headings, instead use language that indicates how the subtopics are related to the main topic.)

The third paragraph should summarize the topics in the context of what must be done to address the issue(s) being introduced. This would conclude with the thesis of the proposed paper that tells the reader what the paper will be about (briefly summarizes the scope and sequence of the paper as a presentation of the topics and a response to the issues).

Assignment length: 1-2 pages, not including the title and reference pages
References: Minimum of five scholarly resources.

The Northcentral University Academic Success Center (ASC) contains an excellent guide on ethical writing. This guide not only describes plagiarism (how to paraphrase, when to use quotes, how to cite sources), but also addresses other ethically inappropriate writing practices. Be sure to download this guide to your computer, save it, and refer to it often as you write.

Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your paper should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards.
