Although my Mid-Week Musings will be minimalist this week, their purpose is not. Cooley and Mead believed that the self-concept was, in large part, the result of internalizing the reflections the person receives from others (especially during childhood), while Goffman argued that the self was the result of internalizing the contents of the projections a person exhibits in trying to manipulate the impressions that other people have of him/her (many of which begin as carefully constructed “performances” that become actual components of the individual’s self-concept.
