Since the original posts and discussions are over-the-top (and I hope they will continue for the remainder of the week), my best contribution might be to just stay out of the way.
Although the contemporary versions of pop culture have been the subject of considerable derision this week, the versions that emerged and proliferated throughout my supposedly idyllic teen years were the subject of widespread condemnation as well, with the consensus of the older generations being that the youth were doomed as a result of being subjected to the corrupting influence of comic books, pool rooms, drag racing, playing “chicken,” motorcycle gangs, rock and roll in general (and Elvis, “the Pelvis” Presley in particular) sitting too close to the TV set; and, ironically, even drive-in movies ( known in their day as “passion pits”) that have received some positive comments this week!
So, what do you think? Did my generation turn out badly or was it much to do about nothing? Upon seeing your answer to that question (to include commenting on some of the specific forms of pop culture listed above) I will look forward to your fast-forwarding to today with a similar analysis and prediction.
