Explain some challenges that working families face.

There are quite a few challenges that working families face, which include paying for daycare or a babysitter. This can be a hard choice for some families to make. Some families find that it is more cost effective to have one of the parents stay home with the kids, rather than pay for daycare. According to our text, Children & families: Understanding behavior & dynamics,

“While stay-at-home parenting is a choice for some, for many it is a purely economic decision. Families often rely on the income of both parents to maintain financial stability, making it impossible for one of them to stay home. However, in some situations it makes financial sense for one parent to stay home in order to avoid paying expensive child care costs” (Wardle & Fitzpatrick (2016).

In other words, it is easier for some families to have a parent stay at home with the kids, instead of having a both of the parents working.

Discuss how these challenges can impact a child’s behavior.

It can determine how much time is spent with the children. Also, if the children are in a good daycare, or at a very involved babysitter, then they should be getting all their needs met. If a child isn’t able to spend as much time with their parents, due to them working, then there may be behaviors. Some children that attend daycare are there 10+ hours a day, with a long day for a little one. By the time their parents or guardians pick them up, it is time for dinner and time to get ready for bed, and they don’t have a lot of time to spend together as a family. Being a daycare provider, I see this very often, and it can be very stressful for the children.

One strategy that could be helpful would be to determine your priorities. I can be hard to balance being a parent, being a spouse, and working full-time, but figuring out what is the most important in your life can help. According to Tim Kehl, the senior corporate chaplain of Industry Weekly, “Spend some time seriously reflecting on what is most important to you, and make a list of your top priorities at work and at home” (April 2012). Another great strategy can be to try to leave your work at work. Sometimes our careers can be stressful, and we can dwell on things that happen at work, when we are home. But by practicing telling yourself that you’re going to leave your work stress at work, and not stress about it at home can be a step in the right direction.
