It is important that students are able to evaluate information to ensure that verifiable, accurate and pertinent research is used to support academic argument and that claims made are viewed as valid and significant. Evaluation of information is also an essential skill for Registered Nurses to ensure that their practice is reflective of current, evidence based, high quality research. The Currency, Reliability, Authority and Purpose (CRAP) test is a set of criteria used to evaluate information sources, such as journal articles, books and websites (Charles Sturt University: Division of Library Services, 2017). Each week in your tutorial you will be given a piece of writing or a website to evaluate. Tutorial time (online and on campus) will be allocated to discussion and critique of this information using the CRAP test.

Throughout this subject you will be required to engage in reflection through questions posed as part of the learning modules; a Journal space will be available in your Interact2 site to add and share weekly reflections on your learning and development.

For this assessment, you are to choose 1 (one) of the articles evaluated during your tutorials. You are then required to research and select one other journal article, not provided as part of your course material, on the same or a similar topic (as the chosen tutorial article), and write your own critique of BOTH journal articles. You are then required to conclude the assessment with a reflection on the process of evaluating the two articles, using the Describe, Interpret, Evaluate and Plan (DIEP) strategy.

How do you evaluate resources? The CRAP test involves asking these questions:

•Is there Currency?
•Is there Reliability?
•Does this have Authority?
•What is the author’s Purpose?
Both of the critiques should:
•Follow the CRAP test principles; and
•utilise academic language throughout.
DIEP is a strategy to help with writing a critical or academic reflection with a focus on four steps. The four steps in this approach are:

•Describe an insight (new understanding)
•Interpret and Evaluate it
•Plan how it might transfer to future practice or learning.
Your reflection should:

•Follow the DIEP strategy; and
•utilise academic language throughout (first person should be used for the reflection only).
The assessment as a whole must:

•Adhere to the word limit (approximately 400 words for each evaluation and 400 words for the reflection recommended);
•adhere to assessment presentation requirements;
•include in text citations and a reference list (using APA 6th referencing). As a minimum both articles must be referenced; and
•be submitted to the Interact2 Assessment Journal.
Supportive materials for this assessment, including templates, can be found in the subject’s Interact2 site under ‘Assessment Resources’.
