B) During his time as a slave, Equiano experienced great change and improvement in his economic condition and social status. What were the causes and circumstances that allowed him, while still a slave, to start rising in the world, accumulate money, and eventually obtain his freedom?

C) The name “Olaudah” implies good fortune, and Equiano considered himself “a particular favorite of heaven.” In what ways was he fortunate? Do you consider him lucky? Why or why not?

D) How was acquiring literacy and education crucial to Equiano’s life?

E) How does Equiano define himself by the time he is writing his book? Is he African? European? How would you most define or identify him as? Why?
