The most difficult question to answer when you write is the “WHY”?

The ANSWER to such a question begins to inform your purpose.

We have often heard instructors use the term thesis: a proposition advanced as an argument or subject of a paper. In the most rigid form, a thesis is a single sentence that appears at the end of your first paragraph.

PURPOSE is a reason for existence, a desired effect, the determination/desire/resolve necessary to accomplish.

So the question you must ask yourself every time you write is: WHY? What is my PURPOSE? This will help you craft a thesis.

A purpose is an ANSWER.

You will need to create FOCUS, a main emphasis that will illustrate your PURPOSE.

For example: “Why did communism collapse in Eastern Europe?” is not an answer. “Communism collapsed in Eastern Europe because of the ruling elite’s inability to address the economic concerns of the people.” This demonstrates to me your FOCUS and PURPOSE to inform me of the cause of Communism’s collapse.

This will require much thought and often will not come until later stages of your writing. Successful writers have answered the why, unsuccessful writers are trapped in the dark limbo of doubt and ignorance.

Thesis Unveiled
A strong thesis will include three components:

* What (your idea/analysis about a given subject or event)
* How (events, ideas, sources that you will use to prove your idea)
* Why (the significance of your idea, the answer to “so what?”)

Remember: A successful thesis provokes thought and provides analysis of a specific subject. It is difficult to reduce a thesis down to parts because a thesis is not formula, however . . .
