I need a 250 response for each post listed below. So all together that’s a total of 500 words separated into 250 for both responses. Responses should be listed as 1 & 2 as well.

Professor and class,

Prior to reading the lesson plan for week six, I thought I had a decent grasp on the APA format and grammar, and all of that. In line with our forum task this week of pointing out what we did not know, I realized that there were severally things grammatically that I have been doing incorrectly for most of this degree. Basic things like the correct usage of a semi-colon seem small, but when the small things like punctuation are used correctly, it lends more credibility to the writer’s stance.

One of my citation errors that Dr. P pointed out to me a few weeks ago was on the proper usage of “et al”, which means “and others” (Cuddy, 2002). It makes it a lot easier to refer back to a source with a lot of authors by just typing it out once (John, A., Dick, B., & Harry, C., 2010), and then referring back to it with (John et al., 2010). Dr. P was the first professor during this degree that has pointed that out to me, I have been inputting full citations for years incorrectly. Another helpful part of this week’s lesson was the quotation check list, asking if a quote is really needed or if it can be paraphrased. I like to use quotes that really stick out to me if I feel that I cannot do it justice by just paraphrasing. One thing that I do not think I paid much attention to before this week was the fact that while APA requires including page numbers when citing direct quotes, it is not a requirement when paraphrasing (The Writing Lab and The Owl at Purdue, 1995-2017).

One of the major reasons that it is so incredibly important to have someone proofread your paper before submitting it is every writer is human and will make mistakes. I can read my paper multiple times before submitting the final product, and look at the typos and incorrect citations and not even catch them. Typing it out in Microsoft Word first can greatly assist in catching misspelled words, but is not always a guarantee and it will not catch the incorrect citations. There are different avenues for getting a paper proofread, in the past my go to has been my husband. I will email my rough draft to him and get a laundry list back with the typos and sentence fragments with an all caps “FIX THIS”. While this helps proofread my rough drafts, it can be irritating when he also corrects my text messages and emails sent to him -_-

Like Tanya, I also struggle with trying to rush through writing assignments, whether it is a rough draft or a forum posting. Several years into this degree, and I am still trying to learn to slow things down for a better result. Hopefully everyone is doing well with their rough draft, we are in the final stretch!

Respectfully,

Cara

Hello Class,

For week six, we are preparing the rough draft of our final assignment. After reviewing the week six lesson, I discovered there is much more to direct quotes within APA style formatting. Typically, I am hung up on citations more often than anything else, but I think I have enough resources to figure things out if I get hung up. However, after reading this week’s lesson, I realized there is far more information to understand before simply deciding to quote something.

Occasionally I like to quote things because I feel it helps to convey a stronger point, also validating what is trying to be said. I personally do not feel that by directly quoting someone is a form of poor writing. It may not be the best practice, but like others, I think by using direct quotes cautiously can be very effective. Understanding now that there are many guidelines or stipulations to using quotations I will be revised my rough draft to ensure I have hit these points.

Regarding citations errors that I have made and learned about over the past few weeks is not properly capitalizing titles with full citations. Because I am faulted on this now, I am sure I have done this for a few years previously. Therefore, titles of reference section entries need to be in “sentence case” not “title case” of which I have been citing things in full citations. I have not been consistent with reference entries up to this point, and I thought I was decent at it. To learn more on this Dr. P suggested reading the article referenced from the link below. In addition, to better understand sentence case, I have also used Purdue On-line writing lab, also referenced below.

Throughout my experience with writing in a college environment, I have, as others in the class, developed writing strategies that have helped me build out a better product than before. Some strategies involve using Tutor.com for a good review of your work, with limitations. However, nothing beats having one or more individuals read over your work, giving your piece a sound once over.

Having someone review your writing for formatting, grammar, citations etc. is priceless. Allowing someone to proofread your paper tremendously helps for many reasons such as it gives you another viewpoint on the topic you are trying convey, ultimately ensuring your paper flows. It may offer a better verbiage, and many other validation points needed to submit the best product possible.

In the past, I have not asked anyone to proofread my papers; I am not the first to admit that I am stubborn. I took English as one of my first classes after starting with AMU and I think this was my learning curve. I have my weaknesses, as most do but I will say I feel my writing has improved. However, nothing compares to having someone else proofread your writing.

The USCG has a Public Affairs rating. The schooling for these individuals is very intricate, involving lots of college style writing, more so than I have ever experienced. Very similar to a higher-level writing course. Fortunately, the unit I am at has about four of them. Stubbornness aside and in lieu of this week’s lesson, I will do myself a favor and ask someone to proofread my rough draft.
