Every semester I assign my students the task of putting the Mongol leaders on trial. Of course, before going to trial the students must prepare their prosecution or defense. Due to time constraints, students usually get as far as presenting the evidence they would use at trial.
We are going to do that activity for this discussion. You will be split into two groups, one will represent the prosecution and the other will represent the defense. The Mongols have been charged with being the most uncivilized and barbaric conquerors in world history.
Those on the side of the prosecution must collect as much evidence as possible to portray the Mongols as barbaric conquerors. Their goal is to convince a jury that the Mongols should be prosecuted for their heinous acts.
Those on the side of the defense must collect as much evidence as possible to portray the Mongols as brilliant and fair leaders. Their goal is to convince a jury to make a not-guilty verdict.
Your textbook is your most valuable resource. However, for this discussion you may reach out to reliable online websites. Just remember to provide a citation. There is much information out there about the Mongols. For example, Genghis Khan alone is noted to be responsible for the death of 40 million people!
You may be creative with your use of evidence, and you may try to refute the opposing side’s points. That is, after all, how law works.
Group 1: defense
Group 2: prosecution
Directions: Each student must have a minimum of 3 posts, one post to the original prompt from the instructor and at least 2 posts in response to other students in the discussion. Remember:
– Use complete sentences, proper grammar, and appropriate language.
– Your original post should be a small paragraph which consists of 3-5 sentences.
– Posts that respond to other students may be more brief.
– Use examples to support your points.
– Cite the course readings you referenced for your response.
