Throughout this course, many opportunities are available to post an initial response to a Discussion topic as well as to respond to your classmate’s responses.

After you have completed the reading, and without reviewing your classmate’s responses, post your initial response to the following Discussion. Your post should be at least 200–250 words in length and should extend the discussion of the group supported by your course materials and/or other appropriate resources.

After you have submitted your initial post, review some of your classmate’s posts and respond to at least two of your classmates. Please review the Discussion Board Participation Rubric under Course Resources.

HUMANISTIC APPROACHES

1. Explain Rogers’ person-centered approach and his concept of unconditional positive regard. How is this approach different from other humanistic approaches? Compare Roger’s approach to a different approach you have studied earlier in the course.

2. Explain each level of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Describe the importance of each need. Explain a situation in which an individual might work towards a higher need even if the lower ones are not met yet. How might you use this information when you develop goals with clients?

3. Explain how the textbook describes: stress, adjustment, and health differences. How might each factor impact one’s personality development? Explain why these individual factors are important to know about your client.

In Chapter 9: “Humanistic, Existential, and Positive Aspects of Personality” you will learn about the theorists Carl Rogers, Abraham Maslow, and Erich Fromm and how they view the development of personality.

Chapter 12: “Stress, Adjustment, and Health Differences” will focus on how maladaptive behaviors/thoughts, illnesses, and methods of healing are related to personality development.
