The Deferred Action for Child Arrivals, or DACA (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., program was created by President Obama through a 2012 executive order. The program has allowed hundreds of thousands of young people who were brought to the United States illegally as children to remain in the country. Applicants cannot have serious criminal histories, and must have arrived in the U.S. before 2007, when they were under the age of 16. DACA recipients can live and work legally in the U.S. for renewable two-year periods.

As many as 800,000 “Dreamers” have applied to join the program since its inception. Immigration rights advocates have said some 200,000 more have sought DACA protection since Donald Trump became President. Recent requests for renewals have been filed at the rate of about 8,000 a week.

As you probably have heard, the Trump administration is trying to end DACA. The administration gave Congress six months to come up with a fix before the federal government officially stopped renewing permits for current DACA recipients.

DACA involves multiple issues, and not just civil rights. There is the question, for example, of whether President Obama had the authority to create the program. But there are also issues of the fair treatment of individuals who themselves broke no law because they were children when they were brought here by their parents or others.
