Writing assignment: After doing the reading, write a short response that answers the following questions:

Realism and Impressionism were both early examples of modern art. What made Impressionist painting different from Realist painting, and what traits did both kinds of painting share? In your answer, consider visual and conceptual aspects of each style, as well as artmaking techniques. How did the subject matter of the two styles differ?
Choose a painting from this week’s reading that you consider to be a particularly good example of Impressionism. What makes it such a good example? Once again, you can discuss visual, conceptual, and technical aspects of the piece (whichever you think are most relevant). As always, it’s a good idea to use facts from the book to back up your answer, and mention the page number(s) where you found those facts if they’re not already common knowledge.
