Creating Games for Instruction

Games can be a useful way to reinforce learning and build skills.

Part 1: Create a file-folder board game that will help students review for a unit assessment in a fun and interesting way! Use the following guidelines in creating your game.

List the topic or concept of your game:

Gather materials: file folder(s), colored paper, and colored pencils or markers for creating the game board and question cards.

Label the file-folder tab with the name of your game.

Create enough questions and answers for the game to cover all the content for the lesson or unit topic. Incorporate the questions into playing the game using the game board. Develop the question cards (about two inches by three inches) for all game questions and answers.

Develop the game board on the inside of the folder, making it neat, colorful, interesting, and creative. Relate the format of your game board and purpose of the game to the topic in some way. For example, for a lesson on water transportation your game board may look like a meandering river.

Write directions for your game that make it perfectly clear how to play the game. Type the directions on a separate sheet of paper and glue them to the back cover of the file folder.

Make sure the content and difficulty of your game are age-appropriate for your students.

Take a picture or provide a digital copy of your game to your teacher for grading. Use the following rubric as a guide for developing your game.
