2A) I am somewhat interested in each theory and can see how each theory would make sense and be useful to anyone trying to counsel someone about their career choice. I think that that these five theorists have in common is that all of their theories either focus on some kind of childhood aspect or they focus on the environment that someone grows up in and how their personalities are created by that environment and child rearing. Therefore, I feel like our childhood or how we are raised helps to determine our personality, which in turn is helpful when trying to consider what kind of occupation we might want.
All five theories are clearly different – Super’s focuses on the developmental process that takes place over our lifespan, that we are continuously evolving, and that our career choices are shaped by the dominant culture and one’s culture of origin. Anne Roe’s theory focuses on unmet needs and the child-rearing environment. Meaning, we choose jobs based on what needs go unmet to us as children. Gottfredson’s theory is more sociologically based and is centered on the inequalities of one’s elders. Holland links personality characteristics to environmental characteristics. Krumboltz focuses on genetic endowment/special abilities, environmental, conditions and events, learning experiences, and task approach skills.
I find that I like something about each theory, but I am most drawn to Anne Roe’s theory. I think that many of us choose our occupations because of something we longed for when we were children. I know that I want to be successful and have a Master’s degree because no one in my family had ever done it before. I also grew up not having that much money and with a family that struggled with jobs because no one had a certain trade or education. I feel like that has always motivated and influenced me. I think that just like this theory speaks to me more than the others, that we need to take that into consideration when using one of these theories to help a client. I think it’s important to be educated on all of the theories so we can see which one most fits our client and their lives, culture, personality, etc.
2B) I like Holland’s view of categorizing the world of work. I do agree that our personality types and interests should play a role when we are trying to decide on what to do with our work lives. I also like that if our jobs don’t necessarily fit our personalities to a tee, that we encourage ourselves and others to find leisure activities that will fit that niche in our personalities. I think that discussing this with a client would be a fruitful conversation. I feel as though people like to learn more about why they are the way they are or about why they make the career choices that the make and I think that Holland’s theory helps to describe and make sense of this a little better. I also think that if we have this discussion with our clients, we can help them find ways to spend their time so that their personality needs are met. It is a good way to set goals or to help find out what might be missing in a client’s life.
