How would you describe your role in your current position and your educational preparation for this role? Being a Masters trained nurse allows me to obtain advanced level positions within the field of study I love. I have leadership and educational nursing experience gained through the MSN program coupled with my personal nursing experience within hospice. It is my job to hire nurses and ensure they are properly trained and set for success within our company.

I also have the skills and knowledge needed to assess potential patients and determine whether they meet criteria. Once weve admitted the patient, I am responsible for placing that patient on a team that I fell best fits that patients individual needs.

 2. How would you explain the unique contributions you as a nurse bring to an interdisciplinary team?I believe we all have something special to bring to the team, but if I were to focus on my skills and attributes, I would say I have the training and knowledge needed to assess and treat the clients we serve. Being the clinical director for this office allows me the ability to hire and supervise nursing staff that I feel have the skills needed to ensure our patients and families are cared for in the best possible manner.

3. How would you describe the unique role of your specialty in promoting quality outcomes for patients? Being a Clinical Director for hospice means I am the manager of the entire team. I am responsible for all disciplines and their quality of work, as well as, being responsible for every patient admitted to our service. I need to ensure my nurses have the skills and training necessary to gather facts and care for patients based upon what is presented. I utilize my active listening skills with each patient assessment, as well as, relying on the assessment skills of the staff nurses that interact with patients each day.

 4. How has nursing research improved or changed a particular aspect of patient care in your specialty area? I think nursing research continues to change the way everyone practices medicine. In regards to hospice, I think the research provides us with valuable information needed to ensure our patients are provided with the best treatment and medications needed to provide comfort during their final journey.

 5. How do you facilitate patient-centered care in your practice?Everything we do in hospice is patient centered on a daily basis. Most of the clients we serve are either living in their own homes or in a nursing facility. We focus all of our attention on the patient we are visiting in that moment. This provides one-on-one care and attention and provides us the opportunity to assess the plan of care and make changes when needed

6. How is cost containment addressed in your specialty area?We are constantly monitoring our spending. We rely on reimbursement from Medicare and Medicaid; there are strict guidelines on the amount of allowable reimbursement from the government for each patient served. If we arent conscience of this, we wont be reimbursed and would eventually be forced to close our doors.

 7. How has your specialty area addressed the needs of underserved patients and populations? We have social workers and chaplains on service that are trained in available community resources. They work very hard to ensure our patients and their families all receive the proper tools and contact…;
