*President Franklin Roosevelt led the nation through World War II. He built a wartime coalition with Britain and the Soviet Union and led the nation to victory. Germany invading Poland, Britain and France declared war on Germany but the people of Germany was not pleased with the content. It was America’s policy to stay neutral in times of war unless America itself was directly threatened. America was not armed enough to enter the war. American chose peace over the prospect of entering into another war. The Great Depression had taken a toll on the world the armed forces were not prepared or large enough it was against American policy. America wanted to remain neutral and avoid a conflict. America felt compelled to be brought into war once Japan led the attack on Pearl Harbor and American Naval Base. Wilson strongly protested British infractions of American neutrality but did not retaliate. German sinking of passenger ships further strained the U.S. position. Wilson secured a German promise to not attack merchant ships without warning. The more Wilson tried to preserve neutrality the closer the nation came to war.

The reasons Franklin Roosevelt gave for entering the war were:

You can’t expect dictators to agree to peace, international generosity or return of true independence, or world disarment.

To show the true backbone of American or to not be “soft hearted”, they need to be wary of “selfish men who would clip the wings of the American Eagle to feather their own nest”.

To uphold the justice of morality.

To help send weapons abroad, but to know that the US would be repaid with similar material, or other goods at which they can provide and we (America) need.

While reading this, I felt it was very similar to Wilson’s reasoning for entering the war. To help the others in need and to demand justice to the wrong doers. They both knew it was only a matter of time until the dictators chose to try to take on America, and that they had no intentions of fighting fair or equally. They were out to destroy and conquer, they were diseases that needed to be dealt with and unfortunately, the only way was war.

The only difference I really noticed, was the willingness to send weapons, airplanes and war ships immediately while we prepared our army. I do not recall Wilson mentioning assisting in that aspect of the war, more so than sending over soldiers.

As always, to involve ourselves in a fight that has nothing to do with us is against what the everyday civilian’s would want. However, knowing the politics involved, the brotherhood of our fellow countries that are at stake, and the inevitability of being “Next” on the list for the dictators, I feel it was a good choice to join in. Especially since we were able to help in ways other than just American lives. The way FDR wrote “For what we send abroad we shall be repaid”. That was a good way of putting us one notch higher on the “you scratch our backs, we’ll scratch yours”. No one likes owing anyone anything, unless it’s owed to you!
