Statement of the Problem
Many families are thrilled when they are informed about the arrival of a new family member. The excitement of having a baby brings hope to many marriages and unites couples more than anything else in comparison. However, this is not everyone’s reality. The endless adjustments and responsibilities a newborn brings along can sometimes be too much to handle. While pregnancy can be the best thing that ever happens to someone, it can also lead to his or her worst nightmare.
Parents are expected to put their family before themselves and be perfect caregivers in the eyes of the public. However when a mother or father experiences perinatal depression, keeping up with social roles is nearly impossible. Kauppi, Montgomery, Shaikh, and White (2012) explain how these expected roles add to depressed parents’ stress level, making them feel worthless. The combination of not being able to keep up with their desired social image, lack of pleasure, and the fact that their baby does not bring them joy, make these men and women feel like they have failed as a parent.
