Philosophy Essay

Please submit an essay with a length of no more than 5 typed double-spaced pages with 12-point
font and normal margins based on one of the following four problems:

The Problem of Love (Plato’s Symposium)

The Problem of Life (Aristotle’s De Anima)

The Problem of Free Will (Augustine’s OFCW)

The Problem of Mind-Body Interaction (Descartes’ Meditations)

This essay should contain the following five parts in sequence:
1. “Problem” – Describe the problem as it emerges in its
corresponding text and point out the logical issue with it. You
should present this problem within the context of the
philosopher in whose work the problem emerges.

(i.e. if you select the “Problem of Love”
, you should discuss this problem in the context of Plato’s Symposium)

2. “Solution” – Interpret a solution that any of the 4 contemporary
thinkers whose work we read for Module 3 of the course, i.e.
Nietzsche, Freud, Fanon or Butler, would propose to the
problem. The approach should address the logical issue posed
by the problem discussed already in 1.

(i.e. if you choose the Problem of Love, you could discuss
how Nietzsche might propose a solution to it based on your
reading of The Gay Science, but you could not discuss how
Aristotle would do so based on your reading of De Anima.)

3. “Criticism” –Interpret a possible criticism of this contemporary
thinker’s solution to the problem from the perspective of the
philosopher in whose text the problem emerged.

(i.e. if you chose Plato’s Problem of Love for 1., you should
interpret a criticism that Plato would give to the interpreted
solution proposed in 2, e.g. this could be Plato’s criticism of
Nietzsche’s approach to the Problem of Love.)

4. “Response” – Assess how the contemporath thinker whose
solution you interpret in 2 would respond to the criticism in 3.

(i.e. if you chose to write on Nietzsche’s solution to the Problem
of Love in 2., then consider in this final section how
Nietzsche would respond to Plato’s criticism in 3.)

5. Assessment – Assess whether the contemporary thinker’s
response (4) adequately addresses the criticism (3). Conclude
by assessing their proposed solution (2) to the problem (1).
