Pop Culture Text Analysis, English homework help

read the following instructions to write pop culture text analysis about “the 5 love languages” book. I’ll attach a sample too.

Pop Culture Text Analysis

Purpose

This assignment asks you to analyze the conditions and considerations that went into the creation of a pop culture text, like a television show or YouTube video, a text we might normally take for granted. In this essay, you will select and analyze a current pop culture text, discussing the way that different parts or features of the text work together to create an ultimately successful (or, unsuccessful, or a combination of both) and effective television show, YouTube video, comedy sketch, stand up special, song, album, movie, etcetera. To support your analysis, you will incorporate quality outside sources to provide information on the text’s author, identify the target audience of the text, and analyze/discuss at least three of its components as examples to justify your thesis concerning the text’s overall effectiveness. So, your purpose is to analyze and the genre of this essay is an analysis.

Research

To write effectively about the author and audience of your text, you’ll need to do some outside research. You’ll need at least two credible, college-appropriate sources (no Wikipedia please!) in addition to the text. You will continue to practice and use MLA in text citations and a Works Cited list (which should include a citation of your actual text). The AV Club is a good place to begin you research, as it provides strong analytical articles on many types of pop cultural texts.

ORGANIZATION

Once complete, your essay will be made up of three main sections plus an intro and conclusion. Each of the three main sections will have a particular focus (the author, the audience, and the text) and will contain what you consider the most important and relevant pieces of research. These sections must be clearly labeled with a bold heading. Though they are separate, your sections should *speak* to each other.

Here is what a working outline will look like. Keep in mind that you may want to rearrange the order of the sections, create more interesting headings instead of author/audience/text, or come up with additional sections.

– Intro: Your introduction will provide the basic who, what, where, when, why, and how of your text so they are fully able to understand your text. End this sentence with a clear thesis statement. Your thesis here will, using an “I” tell if your text is effective overall. Your thesis should also tell the three features of the text that you will develop in the Text section.

The Author: Discuss the creator(s) of your text by addressing where, when, how, and why they created this text. Do research on the author’s background, and what motivated them to create the text. Try to include the most relevant info about the author(s) and why the author specifically created this text. (Interviews with the author/writer about your text are an excellent resource for relevant information.)

The Audience: When and where did this text originally appear? What groups of people were drawn to the text at the height of its popularity? Who consumes the text currently? Think about: age, gender, ethnicity, level of education, sexual orientation, class, upbringing, region, values, beliefs, etcetera. What specific examples from the text help you identify the target audience?

The Text: To write this section of analysis, you must do a close reading/viewing of the text; multiple readings/viewings will strengthen your ability to identify at least three features (positive or negative) of the text that contribute to its overall success. This section should have three “hamburger” paragraphs, each paragraph focusing on developing one feature with examples and quotes from the text, and discussion of examples/quotes. Your thesis sentence should list these three features in your thesis in the order that you discussed them.

Conclusion: As you bring your analysis to a close, remember to restate your overall thesis, i.e. whether the text is effective overall, and why, and to sum up the main points of the author, audience, and text sections. You should then sum up your overall insights about the text and tell the reader if and why you’d recommend.

Assessment

You will receive comments rather than a grade on your “final for now” draft, which I will read closely to determine your success at:

*An effective intro that introduces the text and its author(s), includes a concise summary of the text, and ends with a strong thesis statement. The thesis should reflect the purpose of our essay, which is to analyze, and should comment on the overall effectiveness of the text, using an “I” with a strong verb. In the intro, imagine that you need to explain your chosen text to your audience thoroughly enough that they can follow your analysis.

*A strong thesis statement focused on why the text is effective, and identifies two-three features of the text (positive, negative, or a combination) that you will develop in the Text section, rather than simply summarizing the text.

*Depth of research: finding interesting, relevant information about the author and audience and presenting that information in your essay. Specifically, two sources are required at minimum, and Wikipedia, while you can use it to gain initial information, is not allowed to be one.

*Awareness of an outside audience

*An organization with three sections that have clear, bolded headings: author, audience, and text.

*Well-developed examples, details, facts, and quotes from the text based on a close reading of your text and additional research.

*A strong conclusion that sums up your insights on the text based on your analysis and research. The conclusion must restate the thesis statement and all of the essay’s main ideas.

*Correct MLA in text citations/punctuation, and an alphabetized Works Cited page. Likewise, correct use of italics and quotation marks to refer to the text. (short works in MLA are put in quotes; long works are italicized)

*Strong voice—showing your personality in your writing. Avoid clichéd phrases and ideas! Remember that you can and should use an “I” in this essay to present your analysis.

*Format—using headings, 12 point, Times New Roman font, double spaced, with on inch margins on all sides

*Length—4-5 pages plus an alphabetized Works Cited list

Prewriting: Text Analysis Essay

Please answer the following questions in a Word document.

What text have you chosen to focus on for this essay? Why exactly did you choose this particular text? Do you consider the text to be effective in general? Why, exactly?

Do a bit of research to locate the creators/authors of your text. Is there more than one author? Did anyone else contribute to the creation of the text? What role(s) did these individuals play in the creation of the text?

  • After identifying the creators of your text, research the creator(s) individually. Try specifically to find information that relates to why they created the text; try locate at least one interview to understand more about the author. What is one relevant piece of information you learned about the author from this research? What is the source of this info?
  • Try to locate one source that provides commentary on or evidence about the audience. What information does this source supply about the audience? Does this information confirm your previous assumptions about the audience? Why/why not?
  • Locate one source that specifically evaluates the text’s effectiveness. (the AV Club and Rotten Tomatoes are excellent places to find analysis of pop culture texts.) Does this article/source favorably review the text? What are some specifics/reasons the source finds the text successful? Does the source have a rating system that the text is rated on?

Based on your previous knowledge of the text, who is the target audience? Address the demographics with this knowledge: age, gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, level of education, sexual orientation, upbringing, area of living, values/beliefs. What details about your text support this?

Overall, do you feel that the text works effectively? Why? Brainstorm two specific reasons you feel that the text is successful. Do you have any criticisms of the text at all? Why/why not?
