Instructions: You will continue working on your final research proposal. Please refer back to Lesson 1 for an overview of the proposal’s structure.

For this week, you will be submitting the following elements: subjects for study and measurement.

Subjects for Study

Answer every question under “Subjects for Study” in the “Research Proposal” section in Chapter 1. Also address the following:

• What is your unit of analysis? What is your time dimension?
• How will what you learned this week about sampling affect how you design your approach to your subjects?

  Whom or what will you study in order to collect data? Identify the subjects in general terms, and then specifically identify who (or what) are available for study and how you will reach them. Is it appropriate to select a sample? If so, how will you do that? If there is any possibility that your research will have an impact on those you study, how will you ensure that they are not harmed by the research? Finally, if you will be interacting directly with human subjects, you will probably have to include a consent form

Measurement

Answer every question under “Measurement” in the “Research Proposal” section in Chapter 1. Also address the following:

• What are your independent and dependent variables?
• How are they defined conceptually and operationally?

  Measurement

  What are the key variables in your study? How will you define and measure them? Do your definitions and measurement methods duplicate (which is okay, incidentally) or differ from those of previous research on this topic?
