The two readings for this week (Hunter and Delbourgo) take us into the 17th century, and two important new developments: the first extensive use of the microscope for scientific investigations, and the development of the first major museum. These are understood through two major figues, Robert Hooke and Hans Sloane. Robert Hooke (1635-1703) was and English scientist who made extensive use of the newly discovered microscope. Hans Sloane (1660-1753) was an Irish naturalist and doctor whose collection helped establish the British Museum.
