Review the pieces (cause and effect) assigned. Identify in each piece the reasons for what occurred or the effects or consequences that follow from a particular event, which may be linked in a chain. By definition, causes precede effects, so a cause and effect analysis involves a linear or chronological order. When analyzing effects, typically begin by identifying the subject that produced the effects then move to enumerate or explain what those effects were. Are the causes or effects links in a chain? Does this happen in a definite sequence? If so, follow that chronological/linear order. If not linked in a chain, does the writer organize them from the immediate to the remote or from the primary to the secondary in engaging in a spatial pattern, according to geographic locations/spaces? Does this enhance the reader’s experience?
Replace words (you, because, it, thing) (they, like, we, be)
Additionally, consider the author’s purpose, intended audience, and level of engagement. How effective was the writer in creating images in your mind? Determine as a reader what resonated, engaged and connected as well as what did not. Ruminate over each piece. Identify your favorite and least favorite. Reflect upon the what, how and why for your choices.
