research paper to be done

The first part of writing a research proposal is to define a research topic and problem

statement.

You will study the instructions for preparing a research prospectus, Chapter One

Introduction, and submit the following items: 1) Your selected research topic, 2)

Introduction, 3) Statement of problem, 4) Purpose of the study, 5) Research

questions, 6) Research hypotheses, and 7) A list of 20 related abstracts taken from

your library search.

1) Your selected research topic.

Topic…………………………………………………….

I suggested that you selected the topic that you’re interested to study or to find the

answers. Or choosing the topic that you already have some raw data and/or

background information (previous research in another class).

2) Introduction (suggestion: between 200-300 words)

“The introduction is the part of the paper that provides readers with the background

information for the research reported in the paper. Its purpose is to establish a

framework for the research, so that readers can understand how it is related to other

research” (Wilkinson, 1991, p. 96). The writer should lay the broad foundation for

the problem that leads to the study and create reader interest in the topic.

3) Statement of problem (suggestion: between 100-200 words)

This part indicate what a problem that you would like to research. For example the

areas of concern that researchers want to improve, difficulties they want to eliminate,

questions for which they seek answers. A problem might be defined as the issue that

exists in the literature, theory, or practice that leads to a need for the study.

According to Dr. Frank Pajares, here are some tips in writing statement of problem:

a. It is important in a proposal that the problem stand out—that the reader

can easily recognize it. Sometimes, obscure and poorly formulated problems are

masked in an extended discussion. In such cases, reviewers and/or committee

members will have difficulty recognizing the problem.

b. A problem statement should be presented within a context, and that

context should be provided and briefly explained, including a discussion of the

conceptual or theoretical framework in which it is embedded. Clearly and succinctly

identify and explain the problem within the framework of the theory or line of inquiry

that undergirds the study. This is of major importance in nearly all proposals and

requires careful attention. It is a key element that associations such as AERA and

APA look for in proposals. It is essential in all quantitative research and much

qualitative research.

c. State the problem in terms intelligible to someone who is generally

sophisticated but who is relatively uninformed in the area of your investigation.

4) Purpose of the study

The purpose statement should be clear and specific on what you expect to

accomplish in this research, clearly identify and define the central concepts or ideas

of the study. For example, the purpose of this study is to investigate, to define, to

research, …

5) Research questions

Usually a research problem is initially posed as a question, which serves as the

focus of the researcher’s investigation. Fraenkel and Wallen(1996) explained

characteristics of good research questions as follows:

a. the question is feasible (i.e. it can be investigated without an undue amount of

time, energy, or money.)

b. the question is clear (i.e. most people would agree as to what the key words in the

question mean).

c. the question is significant — worth to investigate and contribute important

knowledge to the field/area.

d. the question is ethical – not involve physical or psychological harm or damage to

human beings/natures.

6) Research hypotheses. Example of writing research hypotheses is posted in

Course Documents/Course Organization/Student Templates/Writing research

hypotheses.

7) A list of related abstracts taken from your library search. You will provide a

minimum of 20 abstracts related to your research topic. The database can include

listings of journal articles, books in print, census data, dissertation abstracts,

conference papers, and newspaper reviews that are useful for your study. One

productive resource is the UCM library http://library.ucmo.edu/ then select

“Online Resources/Databases”. Ebsco and/or Firstsearch are also good resources for

academic and business areas. Call UCM library or have a live chat with the librarian

(http://library.ucmo.edu) if any questions on using the online database.

Suggestions: some articles might provide abstracts with full texts amounting to

several pages. Copy and paste only the abstract section to an MS Word document.

The length should be about 1-2 paragraphs for each article. You are also required to

provide the references of every abstract using APA format. An example is available

at Course Doc./Unit Two/Supplement Materials/Sample-Assignment 3

Post your Assignment 3 in the Discussion Board, under forum “Assignment Three”,

see the due date in the Course Schedule. Items 1-6 should be 3-5 pages, single

space. For the item 7, you will add a file attachment of 20 abstracts within your

thread.
