The earthquake that happened just a couple weeks ago is usually what occurs on a regular basis. Small and tolerable earthquakes are a normal thing in California. Living here my entire life made me grow used to them, although I still do get a little scared while it’s happening, as i’m sure we all do! The biggest and scariest earthquake that I ever experienced was in Northridge, California in 1994. This earthquake was approximately 10-20 seconds but it felt so much longer. This 6.7 magnitude earthquake is one I will never forget. I was only five years old at the time, but I have this memory of literally every item in our house falling on the floor. I recall how upset I was because my huge Barbie collection that I placed neatly on a shelve was ruined. We lived in Pasadena, California at the time which is fairly close to the location of the earthquake. While watching the NOVA video, I finally became aware of why earthquakes are felt and triggered in other areas. Earthquakes are part of a process of tectonic stress and release. This causes tipping points to be reached and can trigger another earthquake. I also recall feeling numerous after shock earthquakes after the big one hit in 1994. One thing that I have realized while experiences multiple earthquakes is, you will never be prepared enough for them.
