Stereotype of Asian Americans
Order Description
The dominant stereotype of Asian Americans in the Exclusion era(mid-19th century to WWII) was that of the “alien ineligible to citizenship,”or the “forever foreigner.” Since WWII, however, the dominant understanding of Asian Americans has shifted to that of the “model minority.” How did this racial “makeover” happen?
First, explain the historical origins of the model minority stereotype(1940s-1960s) with attention to 1) what the stereotype encompassed(that is, how “model minority” was made, and what were its most important features), 2)what “work” or ideological/political function that the model minority stereotype performed in that particular historical moment, and 3) how some Asian American responded to the emergence of model minority stereotype at that time(1940s-60s)
Next, discuss the nature of the model minority stereotype in recent decades(mid-1960s the present). Explain 1) what the stereotype encompassed(that is, how “model minority” stereotype was reproduced, and what were its most important features), and 2) what “work” or ideological/political function that the model minority stereotype has performed from the mid-1960s to the present day; 3)how some Asian Americans have responded to the viral reproduction of the model minority stereotype since the mid-1960s.
