THE IMAGE ANALYSIS

The image analysis is exactly what it sounds like—an analysis of an image. You will need to find an image from a magazine, newspaper, book, or the internet that you can copy or print out. (You will be turning in the image with your essay.)

The image should stand out in some way—because it’s outrageous, funny, tragic, sad, meaningful, patriotic, or in some way making a statement. Advertisements work well because they are often full of fallacies and easy to analyze.

Take a look at the “Checklist for Analyzing Images,” in CT, page 157 (147) for tips and ideas about organizing your essay (attached below).

The most important thing to remember is that you will be doing more than simply describing the image. You must also formulate an opinion about the image that will be the basis of your thesis. Additionally, you must look beyond the superficial and delve below the surface to find the greater significance of your image.

For example: an image of an anorexic fashion model indicates the larger issue of media influence on eating disorders, so in an analysis of such an image, I would expect commentary on the greater underlying issue.

The essay should be 2 ½ to 3 pages in length, double-spaced.
