mHealth Topic Paper
mHealth is a practice of medicine, public health, and wellness enabled and supported by technology devices. The use of mobile devices and applications to improve health outcomes through tracking and monitoring of particular health parameters anywhere, health care services and healthcare research. Mobile devices include cell phones/ applications, and wearable devices for example: Fitbit, Apple Watch, Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM) and Insulin Pumps.
This paper will discuss the use of mobile technology in the management of diabetes using both a Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM) and an insulin pump. A CGM is a small wearable device that keeps track of your blood sugar continuously throughout the day. It is comprised of a sensor, transmitter, and receiver. The sensor is a tiny electrode that is inserted under the skin, it measures glucose levels in the tissue fluid, then a transmitter sends information wirelessly to a receiver, which is a device used to display the blood glucose trends. “An insulin pump is a small, digital device that continuously delivers rapid-acting insulin through a small catheter inserted into the subcutaneous tissue and secured in place on the skin with adhesive (referred to as an infusion set or infusion cannula)†(Berget et al., 2019)
The use of mHealth has the potential to reduce healthcare costs and improve the quality of life of patients living with diabetes. These technologies enable data collection, remote patient health monitoring, communication of data, and monitoring of treatment compliance. Along with the advantages of technology there also exists challenges such as safety, privacy, and reliability which will also be explored.
