But in the current political climate, fundamental changes that might potentially lower costs seem too out of reach, especially considering the existing controversy surrounding the ACA. So what can we do? A team of researchers put together a report about ”small ideas” that, when combined, could save the U.S. health care system $13 to $22 billion per year if successfully implemented. The RAND Corporation, the think tank that put together the report, argues that ”Small ideas do not require systemic change; thus, they may be both more feasible to operationalize and less likely to encounter stiff political and organizational resistance.” I thought this was an interesting way to look at an otherwise intractable situation, and that’s what we are going to focus on for this discussion.Review the report ”Small Ideas for Saving Big Health Care Dollars” by clicking here. (Links to an external site.) While you can read the entire report, and I recommend you do so for your own knowledge, for the purpose of this discussion, look specifically at table 1 on page 4 (the table of the ”small ideas”), table 2 on page 6 (the savings estimates for these ideas), and table 3 on the bottom of page 8 (the feasibility of the ideas). Consider all of these factors as presented, and then address the following:1. Which of these ideas do you think should be an implementation priority? What about a second choice? Why?2. What are your thoughts about focusing on ”small ideas” that could save a large amount of money when combined, but do not fundamentally address a lot of the problems that lead to high costs, as opposed to a sweeping change that could save money and have other benefits in the long run, but would require a lot of time, energy, and political capital to legislate and pass?3. In the same sphere as the presented ideas, do you have any ”small ideas” that might belong on this list? If you work in healthcare, use your workplace as an example. If you don’t have healthcare experience, consider your experience as a patient and what we’ve learned in class so far.No external references are required for this assignment, but you can of course use them if you want.
