world literature

this is review for exam . the first part is about the definition and introduction . please show the details as possible about these works what you knows. St. Augustine, Confession, spiritual autobiography

  • Beowulf, Hrothgar, Wiglaf, folk epic, comitatus
  • Marie de France, lais, Lanval, Gawain
  • Didactic, frame tale, prose, narrator, Ali Baba, Morgiana, Mustapha
  • Geoffrey Chaucer, The Wife of Bath, estate satire
  • The second portion of the exam will ask you to identify certain quotations. You will need to explain the significance of the quotation to a reader’s understanding of the work. Some of the quotations are listed by line numbers. What will appear on the test will be the lines as they appear in the text. You do not have to identify line numbers, pages, or chapters for these quotations. Example: “‘True, my king,/ the sense we were born with cannot last forever…/commit cruelty on a person long enough and the mind begins to go.’” In these lines from Antigone by Sophocles, Ismene attempts to defend her sister’s actions to her uncle and king Creon. While she is considered a weaker character than Antigone because she does not defy the laws of the state and bury her brother, these lines show that Is mene is as clever and brave as her sister. She puts the blame for Antigone’s “failings” on her fate and on Creon.
  • St. Augustine — “Meanwhile my sins were multiplied. […] as the pain grew duller it only grew more hopeless.” (846-847)
  • “For in that instant, with the very ending of the sentence, it was as though a light of utter confidence shone in all my heart, and all the darkness of uncertainty vanished away.” (849)
  • Beowulf — Lines 144-162, 175-188, 1758-1784, 2401-2416, 2864-2891, and 3173-3182
  • Marie de France — Lines 11-32, 242-285, 291-302, and 635-646
  • Geoffrey Chaucer — Lines 111-120, 1043-1051, 1245-1270

The final portion of the exam will be a thoughtful response of at least 350-500 words to one of the following questions.

  • Many of the works we’ve read for this section examine leadership and the power that comes with it. Choose one of the following kings/heroes and discuss what qualities they possess that might qualify them as good rulers or perhaps not good rulers of their kingdoms: you may choose from Hrothgar, Beowulf, Arthur, and Lanval. You can choose to compare and contrast two rulers if you like or look at the same ruler in multiple tales.
