Dell deChant broke the lecture down into three parts. First, he explained the understanding of the world today, second, his book The Sacred Santa, and to finish up he spoke about Christmas in America.He then went on to speak about how important religious studies are to college students. He basically said you can’t see the world unless you have some understanding of religion. He asked us if we all knew what the day after Thanksgiving was. Of course, we all know what this important day is, it is Black Friday. It is known as black Friday because all the stores are in red before this day and then once they begin to make profit they are in black. He then explained that our economic system is based on consumption. We allow the power of economy define us. This is also why we judge people based on what they do and don’t have. He also mentioned the “Frightful Five.” These are Microsoft, Apple, Google, Amazon and Facebook. These have heavily influenced consumers. In the second part of the lecture he went on to discuss consumer culture. He posed the question, “Is it possible that our profoundly secular culture is actually profoundly religious?” The ultimate power of our culture is the economy not nature. He then closed with how consumption is like a religion. That is where Santa being the God of consumption came about. The main message of the lecture was to expose the fact that Americans like to consume, and it has become such a normal thing to us that we took the religious holiday of Christmas and turned it into almost another religious holiday of consuming. Also, Christmas isn’t the only holy day of consumption either

I found it very interesting how deChant could take something like consumption and basically explain it as a religion because that is what Americans have done. When he explained how consuming/shopping is a sacred ritual and how Santa is the God of consumption it really opened my eyes to how right he was on this topic.

This lecture explained the aspects of American consumption. DeChant explained that consumption is based on economic status more than anything, which has always been the one main aspect. However, one thing that has changed throughout time is the rise to cultural dominance with corporations such as Google, Apple, Facebook, etc. The media has taken over the world and had a huge influence on American consumption. He also went into depth about how Christmas is a season of sacrilege and holiness. Religion is more than just going to church it is also a big influence in economy. In the economy, consumption is almost a ritual for everyone and without it the economy would implode.

One revelation I got from this lecture was that our secular culture may actually be a more religious culture. Religion is the basis of many things in our life such as the major holiday Christmas. Many people forget how big of an impact religion has in our lives and is far more than just going to church. Religion is in the economy; consumption is an example of a religious ritual in the economy and is even considered an addictive ritual. Without religion the world would collapse both culturally and economically.
