What do you find most challenging about using quotations from research correctly? While using a quotations seems more straightforward than summarizing or paraphrasing at first glance, it’s not always as easy as it sounds. Why not?
The use of emoticons has a place in writing but not in the professional world. If people want to use emoticons when texting or emailing their friends and family, that is great. If a colleague or client sent an email with an emoticon it would feel unprofessional. In Judith Newman’s essay she quotes Bill Lancaster “Certainly I understand the need for clarity. But language, used properly, is clear on its own” (as cited in Reinking and von der Osten, 2011, p. 509). Emoticons are very informal and should never be used in professional writing. They can be misunderstood and taken the wrong way. Imagine a CEO of a company getting an email from one of the employees with a smiley face or some other emoticon, it would be an interesting reaction. Use your words to express yourself.
