The Unit 8 will focus on the Response-to-Intervention approach to the identification of students needing additional supports prior to being referred for special education. Logic tells us that if we can intervene in a child’s life early on, the need for special education may be forestalled. With this in mind, the Response-to-Intervention was designed to have three, progressively intensive support systems – or tiers. Within the Secondary Tier, self-management programs can be used to help students control their own behaviors, along with other approaches designed to promote student success academically, behaviorally, and socially (Shepherd & Linn, 2014).
